Hi. It’s Diana.
My creative practice is
part of my spiritual practice. An important aspect is awareness
of place: my yard, my home, and my environment– usually one of three cities; my
hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana; The Woodlands, Texas, where I raised my kids;
Galveston, Texas, where I live now. I found that I must spend at least
equal time out of my studio as in to be creative at all.
In most pieces, you
can find organic lines, patterns, and layers. Sitting to draw, sketch, or
start a piece is a journey of discovery. After the initial phase I slow down
and spend time. I work on no more than 3 pieces at once. More than that and it
all goes to mush in my head.
Moving to Galveston came unexpectedly and is a dream come true.
My art focuses on place and home. I incorporate layers in almost all the art I create. I'm drawn to layers because of my 30+ years quilting, and, to me, layers create interest and depth.
I love paper. The texture
adds to each piece. Also, if the paper comes from a book, card, or magazine,
that adds another layer and incorporates my interest in stories and literature
into collages and mixed mediums. I have work on boards and canvas, but paper is
my favorite. Generally, I use implements that resemble a pen, so not much brush
work.
I come from a family of
artists and craftspeople: grandmothers who quilted and did needle work, a
grandfather who welded, a father who worked in 3-D arts including sculpting and
carving, and a sister who works in clay. I earned a BA in English Literature
with a minor in visual art and a Masters in Humanities. I live with my husband,
Michael, a senior dog, Frills, and an affectionate cat, Maggi-pie.
Thank you for taking time
to explore my studio. I hope you find something intriguing.
